10 obstaclemudrunner.co.uk ForEliteAtheletes toFunRunners Double win for the unicorn On the 12th May 2018 this incredible athlete took part in Tough Mudder Midlands and was victorious taking 1st place and winning the top prize of £500. Later that day he took part in Europe’s Toughest Mudder where the best and Toughest Mudders’ from around Europe all set out against the best of the best. His plan was to have a cheeky quiet “Tougher” wave in the morning then just have fun at the 8 hour night event. But guess what? He won that too winning £4000! Not a bad days earnings I’d say. We had a little chat. Well, he says he “runs really slow.” Hmmm, please see definition in Oxford dictionary as I’m not sure you’re too familiar with the meaning. My version confirms it mean “not quick or fast”. This is NOT a category we think you fall into. OMR: So what does your training generally look like Tristan ? • I race…….. quite a lot. • I never lift or train my grip. • Average training speed is a 5min/km. The distance I do depends on time and if I’m in the mood for running. OMR: What does your diet consist of? • Banana is my favourite way to start the day. • I eat whatever is in the cook house but sweet potato and chicken is always a pre-race favourite dinner. • Or ice cream. I love to smash a 4 pack of ice cream the night before a race too. • I eat all chips, sweets (but try not to around my daughter), I don’t drink alcohol, I drink coffee and I like it STRONG. • Always, always, always hydrate. “What do I do in my down time? Do you REALLY want to know?” OMR: Absolutely • Come clubbing and find out... Not much really, I like running and the community. • As for my social life, well that just involves being a sexy unicorn. OMR: What’s better, unicorns or chocolate? • Depends what I’m planning on doing with it. OMR: Goals for 2018? • No major aims for this year, I just want to run and have fun, do as much as I can to get my fitness back to where it was before I picked up an injury last year. • My drop in fitness slowed my Marathon time from 2:29 in 2017 to 2:44 in 2018. OMR: Errrr, that’s still a REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY good time but we understand your desire to always do better. OMR: How did you find ETM ? • I had to dig deep for the last lap, the rest was perfect game plan. I felt pretty good, tired and heavy but my head was on it and I could have carried on. OMR: What or who is the voice in the back of your mind that drives you to keep going? • Voice in my head? That’s just crazy talk! OMR: What will you spend your winnings on? • I intend to spend my winnings on more races, trainers, savings, doing something cool. OMR: Did you think you’d win? • I never thought I would win both Tough Mudder and Europe’s Toughest Mudder in the same day! I did have a little cry after the race and celebrated with rainbow cake and Domino’s pizza with my daughter Lily to also celebrate her birthday. OMR: Does Lily want to be just like Daddy? • Lily hates MUD . OMR: Enough said! CONGRATULATIONS Tristan, thanks for chatting. RACE : WINNING always be a unicorn He says he... “ runs really slow ” Photos: Tough Mudder How does he do it?
