Solo entrants are welcomed to the Back Before Dark 10km fell run. On the longer (25-100km) challenges, solo or duo competitors are asked to provide evidence of their experience through a “qualifying event“. This does not have to be part of an organised event: All we ask is you can name a time when you previously tested your existing walking and navigation experience. Teams of 3 or more need not provide details of a qualifying event, but should have existing walking or navigation skills. This could be through experience or training you’ve received. Entrants are not permitted any additional external support, eg pacers or additional personal crews. Navigate yourself or join a led group Only the 10km Back Before Dark route is flagged on the ground, on all other routes (25-100km) you’ll be met by our safety teams at checkpoints. You have the option of navigating yourself around the challenge route or joining a led walking group with a guide. Mountain Leaders will lead groups on the Copper and Bronze challenges, and overnight section of the Silver challenge taking care of your navigation and safety on the hill. Silver challengers must navigate themselves during daylight hours. Gold Ultra challengers must self-navigate throughout. We adopt the principle that you should only accept support that is available to every other entrant. Cafe’s which would serve any other entrant are ok; your mate who leaves after seeing you is not!
