6 YOU need OCR and OCR needs YOU. March 2020. Sadly, for so many of us, the pause button was abruptly pressed on everyday life and our usual weekend antics ceased play with immediate effect. Fast forward to now. Where are we at? We’re 80% back to normal but there’s still something missing. You! The Covid-19 pandemic has had an awful lot to answer for. During that time a lot of us took to home workouts and let’s be honest it was a perfect time to try something new whilst racing was at a complete stop. Lots of us have also continued with our new-found alternative training that so brilliantly filled a void, BUT, OCR needs us. It’s time to put the love back into Obstacle Course Racing. In the last few years, we’ve watched race entries decline in numbers so drastically that it is no longer viable for some events to go ahead and whilst we all may wish to book our year ahead, it’s completely understandable why some people are hesitant. However, we need you to have faith and help put the trust back into our sport. Without prior booking and guaranteed attendees, races simply cannot happen. So please, don’t ponder too long, book that race you’ve been keeping your eye on before it really is too late. We’ve lost many great events over the last few years so please help to stop any more from going. It really doesn’t matter whether an event is large or small, without the numbers crunching in all the right places, they will not survive. So please, I ask again, book it and why not encourage a friend to try too, they might find it’s what they’ve been missing in life. RACE See you in the mud soon!

From the moment this shoe came out of its box my brain kicks into ‘critic’ mode and I start analysing immediately. What can I say? First impressions are that they look amazing. The colour is stylish with a funky sole that attracts attention. They have a great feel to them, a woven top which suggests great breathability. They’re not clumpy at all, they are, as the name suggests, lightweight, I even weighed them, yes, I really did. They’re soft and flexible and, actually, I can’t wait to put them to the test. Cue, gym session at my local @ TheBetterBodyGroupSevenoaks What better test than a simulation hybrid @Hyrox workout, after all, if they’re good enough for 10x CrossFit athlete Scott Panchik then they must be pretty good. Let’s see… I take them in with me. My gym shoes are my gym shoes, I don’t wear them outside. Here goes... My foot slides in super easily, with laces tied my foot feels well supported, they’re comfortable and I can wiggle my toes easily so lots of room there. They’re a good fit around the heel and I’ve great support in the midsole. I do a little test-walk, you know like you do when you try new shoes on in a shop. I do a few turns and walks up and down, the gym has suddenly become my catwalk. There’s something about new trainers that just makes you more determined to have a great workout. So, what do I think? I instantly notice how the sole makes good contact with the rubber gym floor and I’m immediately reassured that I can put complete trust into this shoe. With what I’m about to do, if this shoe doesn’t grip, I’m faceplanting the floor. My workout consisted of: n 1km run. These felt 100% fine for the short distance that I did. n 1km Ski-erg. You need a good stance here and I could instantly feel my toes splay out for balance, I’m glad there is enough room in the toe box. n 1km Row. No problem here whatsoever except that I can’t stop looking at how pretty they are. n 25m Prowler. Loaded with 75kg this was going to be the main test. If grip failed me, I’d be flat on my face in a split second. The surface I’m on now is a soft gym turf, designed for sleds and prowlers to glide over. I can report I did NOT fall flat on my face. Phew. n 25m Sled Pull. A steadfast stance is required here to be able to hold a rope to pull the weighted sled towards me. With a strong grip, my feet firmly on the ground, I pull the rope and the weighted sled. The contact with the ground is locked and I successfully return the sled to its starting position without landing on my rear. n 100m 10kg Weighted walking Lunges. I take long, confident strides forwards, as I come back up from the lunge I’m pushing up from the front heel. I can feel a good connection with the surface, but it also feels adequately cushioned. I finish the 100m (I may have paused once or twice!) and my feet feel fine, if only they helped the burn in my quadriceps too! n 3 x 15 Wall Balls. Taking a nice wide stance for these deep squats and high wall throws, I feel well balanced and stable. n I finish with another 1km run. Cool down, stretch and that’s me done. I honestly think I put these shoes through their paces well. The top 5 characteristics that I think stand out the most for me are: n Secure grip n Comfortable n Supportive n Breathable. n Roomy - but not so much that my foot is moving about. 9 Head over to inov-8.com for more information OMRM HQ test: inov-8 F-Lite 260 v2 I was super keen to test this shoe. I mean, look at it, it’s a thing of beauty. I absolutely love how these shoes look, the detailing is stunning. They’re classy, cool and functional! Who says you can’t have it all? 10 Can you really change your life in just 75 days? This is Tara “I’m 50 (something), diabetic and I can honestly say that The Six Pack Revolution has taken 10 years off me looks wise and my energy levels have certainly matched my looks! I have increased my fitness to a whole new level and anything I do now to improve will surely only help me in later life. Since starting not only have I lost weight and gained strength, but I also have a much happier, sharper mind, I’m not so stressed, I deal with problems quickly and efficiently and I no longer worry about things I have no control over. My sons are extremely proud of me which is something every parent wants to hear. I thought my career was over when I broke my wrist and dislocated my hand. I put weight on, withdrew from life, I believed my time had passed. I was fat, 50, unhappy and single. I wasn’t in a great place. Now, I’m proud to say I am living proof that it’s never too late to turn your life around and I’ve shown what can be done with a small shift in mentality and the support from a programme that really works. You can be fit, strong and healthy in body and mind no matter what stage of life you’re at.” It doesn’t even take long when you know how. 1 What would your top tips be? Read the handbook! Read ALL the information given in prep week, watch the videos, make sure you get a food plan written down and prep enough meals for a few days at a time. Watch the challenge videos carefully and pay attention to technique. Embrace the group and enjoy being part of a team. 2 How was the exercise and food for you? It was great getting back to exercising as I’d suffered an injury which made my life spiral. I lost a lot of confidence, so I was training at home and not in a gym. I’d gained weight and didn’t want to be surrounded by fit people in a gym. Exercising at home was the perfect solution. There are so many recipes to choose from and the options for swapping proteins/carbs means you can adjust them to suit your taste, new recipes are always being added too. They are all simple to make, most taking 20 mins or less. You just need to be organised. 3 Describe how you feel looking at your start and end photo’s. I was so overwhelmed with my first waves results. I now look back and feel I am totally unrecognisable. I see my first photo and think I NEVER want to go back to that. I had totally lost my way and felt utterly broken so it’s like looking back at a past life. 4 What advice would you give to anyone considering taking part in the future? JUST DO IT! – Investing 75 days in yourself means you are then in a better place mentally, physically and emotionally to help support your family/friends, face your daily life with less stress and develop a ‘can do’ attitude. You’re never too old or too unfit. There are no REVIEW : SIX PACK REVOLUTION These 2 did, along with hundreds of others

obstacles you cannot overcome unless the obstacle is you! If you want to live your best life, embrace the program, trust the process and be prepared to give it 100%. You won’t regret it. This is Eduardo Eduardo works full time as a Team Leader for a food manufacturing company. He has a family and often works shifts. His everyday life is busy, and he travels a lot with his very talented daughter who plays U16’s professional football all over the country. Eduardo committed to something truly remarkable, and it has changed his life. 1 Where did you first hear about SPR? From a work colleague, I noticed a drastic change in his weight, so I asked how he did it. He told me he was part of a fitness program called The Six Pack Revolution. I got home on that same day and joined SPR online. I had tried everything else so I thought I may as well give it a go, at that time I was 99kg and very unhappy with my weight. 2 SPR is managed in groups so you’re never alone on your journey. How much did being in a group benefit you? Massively! I think one of the best things in SPR is being part of the groups, the group keeps you accountable, and when you are feeling a little low all the other participants and head coaches pick you up encouraging you to the finish line. And a massive bonus is that I have made friends for life. 3 There is a lot to take in, any tips for first timers? Yes, make sure you prep your food for the week, it will make your life a lot easier! That way you can focus on your challenges and eat at the right time. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask, Scott and his team will answer you very quickly, and other participants will offer advice too. 4 Did you enjoy the exercise part of the programme and were the recipes tasty? Yes, I really did! I was a bit worried at first because I hadn’t done any exercise for many years prior to SPR, but the program built my fitness gradually from scratch and by the time I realised, I was smashing those challenges. The food was great, lots of meal and snack choices, one of my favourites was the Pina Colada Smoothie, just wow! 5 Describe how you feel looking at your start and end photo’s. I feel amazing! I look younger, healthier and most importantly I feel really happy about myself. 6 What advice would you give to anyone considering taking part in the future? GO FOR IT! It will be a life changing experience for you, if you follow the food plan and do your challenges, you will achieve the goals that you are looking for, I can’t recommend SPR enough! 7 How has it changed your life? Before I joined SPR I was living a very unhealthy lifestyle, I had been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease, I had a very poor relationship with food and never did any kind of exercise. My mental health was going from bad to worse because everything I started, I never finished and therefore always ended up back at the beginning. But with the support of Scott and his team I found I could stick to this and WOW! What can I say? I was blown away with the results and how healthy I became, I went from 99kg to 74kg. I went from not being able to run even 1K to running 15k with no problems. My health changed drastically and my mental health is in a much better place, I can honestly say that I’m happy. SPR changed my life in more ways than I thought it would, and is part of my life now, I will be forever thankful to Scott and his team. 11 REVIEW : SIX PACK REVOLUTION To find out more or to join, please go to: @sixpackrevolution https://www.facebook.com/TheSixPackRevolution www.thesixpackrevolution.com

12 Rough Runner Review Linda Johnson vs Travelator With winter out of the way, I decided to jump onto the Rough Runner OCR race with its TV game-show style looking obstacles; you know the ones, the big inflatable swinging balls and knee-high padded poles coming at you from every direction to take you out and send you flying into water – if you think Total Wipeout then you’re somewhere close. On the 3rd April 2022 the good old British weather decided to throw a nice icy cold morning at us making the water obstacles suddenly seem much less inviting. I had opted for the competitive wave with a few of my fellow race-team joining me on the start line. The event was part of the UKOCR OCR Series and we wanted to earn some points towards that. On arrival, parking was easy – nice and close to the event village and check in was super-fast to collect a timing chip. There was plenty to see from the event village as well as a large bag drop area with space for changing after the race. There were vending trucks for coffee, warm food, lots of brilliant tunes playing and a fantastic crew in the event village entertaining the crowds. The race started on time with the announcement coming over the loud speakers for us all to go over to the start pen. I decided to start at the back as I was fully aware of a lot of water on course however, due to the low temperature that morning the river slide and swim from the 1st lap had been removed which suited me just fine. We were given clear instructions as this was a 2-lap wave and shortly after we were off. The course was all trail with a mixture of wooden climbing A frames, a quick carry around a field with a sandbag, some monkey bars, a set of rings over an inflatable pool of water, a heavy hoist pull and an amazing inflatable seesaw which we spent way too long having a laugh at. REVIEW : ROUGH RUNNER Photo: Rough Runner Photo: Rough Runner

13 We went past the slide on the 1st lap and could see a large inflatable doughnut in the middle of the swim which obviously the runners were expected to climb up and through. On the 1st lap we had wooden floating platforms to get across the water and to be honest I was thankful for that. I had already decided not to do a 2nd lap due to the cold. The ground was still frosty that morning so the event staff informed us that the competitive wave would be allowed a timed penalty in a waiting pen for 1 minute instead of having to do the swim which I totally agreed with. After the swim zone, a few more obstacles and another inflatable seesaw, we headed back into the event village where there was a central platform you had to run across... this was while dodging long batons which were going around like clock hands to knock you off into water. I was running with a friend Claire Rosser, so we spent a while watching each other dodge a close fate of getting wet before coming to the famous.... travelator. Well, what can I say, I just stood there and thought I was going to end up looking like an Aldi item being thrown through a checkout at 100 mph funnily enough, I wasn’t too far wrong either!! There were 2 sides to choose from and one side was faster than the other. I was lucky, my 1 lap relatively fresh legs worked hard enough to get up the slower side on a 2nd attempt but watching the other racers come in off their 2nd laps you could really see what a difference 2 laps and the cold water swim had made to them. I then spent a good hour watching lots of people try every way possible to get up the travelator... we saw everything from people taking wet shoes off to actually taking shoes AND socks off, and several very close attempts with staff at the top holding hands out to help people. There were 2 people taking it in turns on the mic at the bottom of the travelator encouraging people and the general banter coming from them was brilliant. All in all, a really cracking day out, not only for competitive racing but for having some proper fun with a bunch of friends or like-minded people. This really is one of those races where I could have stayed and played all day on the big inflatable obstacles. Thank you to everyone who made the event possible. The staff, the volunteers and all fellow attendees. I truly made some unforgettable memories that day. www.roughrunner.com REVIEW : ROUGH RUNNER @RoughRunners @RoughRunners @rough.runner Photo: Rough Runner Photo: Rough Runner

TeamDB With a name like DBS (Designed By Sports) you’d be right to put your confidence in a company that has the design of their products based on sports and not just on fashion. Here, I truly believe they have hit both nails on the head. Not only are they quite possibly the most comfortable pair of running leggings I have ever put on (trust me, that’s not something I say lightly when I own 45 pairs!) but they do look and feel amazing. Soft, strong, supportive, no constantly pulling them up needed from me. My only slip-up was that I didn’t tie the waist string before I washed them, so I had to thread that back in – rookie mistake from moi. OMRMHQ and my mini version put these to the test in every which way we could. See for yourself >>> Let’s make this a Great British Summer. With some incredible sporting events lined up let’s get behind our great sportsmen and sportswomen and cheer them on in our TeamDBs. These leggings will put you in the mood and will lift your spirits. They are a panelled legging made from our regular compressed material. The usual amazing quality in this fantastic design. They are quite possibly the most comfortable pair of running leggings I have ever put on 14 REVIEW : KIT Our stunning full-length leggings are made from the most incredibly soft but supportive material. Perfectly compressed making them ideal for sport, but so light you hardly know you are wearing them. Our leggings are all squat proof and come with what our customers refer to as our ‘magic DBS band’. Our waistband tucks you in whilst providing you with great support. No yanking or tugging required with our leggings, once they are in place, they stay in place. Features include: n High waistband for extra support and comfort n Rear discrete zip pocket large enough for a phone n 2 triangular thigh pockets n Removable drawstring tie n Flat stitched seams to prevent irritation n Triangle gusset n 27% spandex 73% polyester As the material is compressed, we suggest sizing up if you are between sizes. They are a snug fit as they are designed to give you the ultimate performance for sport. Check out their other products here. www.designedbysports.co.uk Read below to see what they say about their own product, but I genuinely give this brand a 10/10. With a price ticket of just £39.99 this is definitely money well saved.

The versatile range also includes electrolyte drinks for improved hydration, protein products to aid recovery and get the most from your training and competition and endurance energy bars. For those in OCR or multisport, the versatility of VOOM’s products is perfect! VOOM always prioritises stomach comfort and palatability – what’s the point in taking on the best energy product if it’s an ordeal to eat, or it ruins your day with stomach upset? VOOM believes athletes of all levels should be able to enjoy taking on energy with great-tasting products that deliver on every level. What makes Pocket Rockets different to gels or other energy bars? The speed and efficiency of energy delivery is paired with the convenience of a portable and mess-free bar. With twice the energy of most gels Pocket Rockets are easier to use and faster acting! The solid-form bars come in four bite-sized chunks so you can take on energy as and when you need it, we recommend one piece every 15 mins. The melt in the mouth texture of each chunk makes them easy-to-use, even at faster paces. The texture also means glucose can be absorbed through the gums, getting to the muscles quicker than energy gels which are wholly absorbed in the small intestine, sometimes resulting in tummy upset. Both the portionability and the texture of the product contribute to improved stomach comfort by reducing the concentration of carbohydrates in the stomach at any one time. With 40 grams of carbohydrate per bar with stomach comfort and a range of refreshing fruity tastes from freeze-dried fruit, what’s not to love? Pre Workout The Beta Blast Pocket Rocket is ideal before competition or high intensity sessions. Each bar contains 40 grams of fast-acting carbs to top up energy supplies, 150mg of caffeine to prime the body and focus the mind plus 2g of Beta Alanine (the practical required dose) to fight lactic acid build up - push harder for longer! *Most traditional energy gels. FUEL : VOOM 20 During The Lemon & Lime Electro Energy is the go-to bar for sustained energy during prolonged exercise. With twice the energy of a gel the Electro Energy has 40g of carbohydrates per bar and 100mg of electrolytes to aid hydration. Wherever your activity takes you this portable bar is easy to use with four bite-sized chunks – go stronger for longer! The Caffeine Kick is the perfect not so secret weapon for when fatigue sets in or a difficult part of the course looms. With 175mg of caffeine and 100mg of taurine this bar gives a mental and physical lift to get you home from a long ride or up a tough climb. The four chunks mean you can dose your energy and caffeine level. Get going and get home! Endurance When extra staying power is needed the Beetroot range of endurance bars hit the spot. The naturally occurring dietary nitrates in beetroot boost performance by aiding arterial blood flow. Additionally, a range of energy sources offer both fast-acting and slower release carbs plus healthy MCTs (medium chain triglycerides) from coconut oil, further boosting endurance and keeping you fuelled. It’s an ideal product for marathon and ultramarathon, climbing, hiking, long days on the bike or even multi day events. First to launch in this range, the Raspberry and Beetroot bar, has already been awarded a Great Taste award – not only does it give you energy and aid performance, it is delicious too! Also in the pipeline are new and exciting flavours to please the palate throughout your day. Post Workout & Recovery VOOM have your recovery ritual covered with a choice of products to help you recover faster... Perhaps one of the best tasting protein bars out there, VOOM Recover Fudge, makes recovery on the go super-easy. With 10g of whey isolate it aids muscle repair and a 3:1 ratio of carbs to protein replenishes your glycogen stores. The 3:1 ratio is optimal for the fastest recovery and consuming both macronutrients together enhances uptake of each. VOOM’s Rapid Recovery shake, delicious Belgian Chocolate and Vanilla flavour, offers 19g of protein per serving as well as carbs to replenish the body’s glycogen stores after exercise. The inclusion of AstraGin® speeds up macronutrient absorption by up to 40% making this one of the fastest (and tastiest) ways to recover. Hydration To ensure your hydration is on point VOOM’s Hydrate Smart, a hypotonic and nootropic electrolyte drink is perfect. With 460mg of full-spectrum electrolytes per serving it can hydrate up to 40% quicker than water alone. It replaces salt losses in a ratio designed to match those lost in sweat. Again, stomach comfort is key, faster absorption from the stomach reduces the time the drink is in your stomach and therefore the risk of bloating or stomach upset. The light, refreshing Lemon & Lime flavour encourages voluntary drinking to further aid hydration. 24 TRAINING The great outdoors Based at Suffolk Food Hall in Ipswich, Suffolk, Field Fit is the brainchild of a Personal Trainer, Coach and OCR Athlete Jack Carpenter. Situated in beautiful farmland, with views over the river Orwell, Field Fit is fast becoming a favourite training facility for the UK OCR community. From a young age, Jack was a keen swimmer and triathlete, and went on to find the world of Spartan and OCR, taking part in his first Spartan in 2016. After relocating to Suffolk, Jack realised there was a huge need for outdoor and OCR specific training facilities in the area, and this is when Field Fit was established in 2018. Field Fit specialises in outdoor bootcamps, but also in the more competitive side of OCR. It features a super-short course, short course and long course. With Spartan being the main OCR series in the UK, Field Fit has obstacles such as Ape Hanger, spear throw, Z walls to cater to Spartan athletes, but also has many technical obstacles, inspired by European races such as Toughest and Viking races. Jack has built Field Fit from the bare bones. What was an empty farming field in 2018 is now home to over 30 bespoke obstacles, all hand built by Jack and with help from the Field Fit members. There is a real community feel here, despite having some of the most technical training obstacles in the UK, all abilities and ages are welcome, and the members really look after each other. Field Fit has also hosted some of the biggest names in OCR for training too, with Nicole Mericle, Aaron Newell and Ryan Atkins having all taken part in bootcamps and led special bootcamp sessions themselves. “The obstacles here are so varied, there’s something for complete beginners to accomplish, but also obstacles that can test even the well-seasoned OCR racers among us. Field Fit is such a fantastic place to train”. Charlie, Field Fit member. Field Fit has a timetable of weekly bootcamps which cover not only OCR, but HIIT, weights and running. Alongside this they also host regular events throughout the year, from nighttime endurance events to their flagship event, the Big OCR Weekend – this year on the 20th August – you can sign up via www.fieldfit.co.uk/big-ocr-weekend Field Fit is also home to the Field Fit Academy, bespoke OCR training for 8–16-year-olds, training and building confidence in some of the most talented kids in the UK OCR scene. “I love sending my kids to the Field Fit Academy, they have both completed two terms here now and their confidence has grown in abundance, not only their confidence with obstacles but life confidence too. It’s such a fantastic place for them to train and burn off energy from the week.” Mark Power – father to Jess and Finn. Alongside running Field Fit, Jack is also a running and OCR coach, UKOSF coach, Spartan SGX and level 3 PT qualified. fieldfit.co.uk www.facebook.com/fieldfitatthesuffolkfoodhall/ www.instagram.com/field.fit/ jackcarpenter.co.uk Field Fit is the brainchild of a Personal Trainer, Coach and OCR Athlete Jack Carpenter
