Obstacle Mud Runner - Issue 5 - page 18

Wolf Run
Knowing I had a 2-hour drive ahead, I was up and at
‘em at the crack of dawn. Ok, slight exaggeration,
I left the house at 7:15am to meet my companion for
the day.
A quick Starbucks top up and we were heading
off towards the motorway. The journey was easy,
pleasant enough, some questionable singing going
on in my car but that’s another story.
Signage and directions to the event could not have
been clearer.
Parking was highly organised and was £5 per car
(which seems about normal these days) I quickly
became aware of just how big this event was going
to be. Being a Wolf Run virgin, I really had no idea
what to expect but knowing that it has won “Best
Obstacle Race” 3 years in a row now, I was excited
to find out why.
I readied myself by the car then set off for
registration. Some lovely friendly and a few familiar
faces greeted me and quick as a flash I was all
done and ready to go. Waivers handed to you as you
entered the tent meant there was no unnecessary
queuing behind a string of participants without the
relevant paperwork complete.
So, all that was left was for me to drop my key in the
FREE bag drop, visit the loo, which I’ll just say were
more than plenty of and get ready for my start time.
With time on our side, we wandered backwards along
the course for the last 1km or so and checked out
what was to come. What I could see really excited
me. There was something different about that day,
was it the sunshine that lifted everyone’s mood or was
it the fact that it wasn’t time chipped so everyone was
really there for the full on fun factor?
The weather was amazing, the best day of the year by
far, the mood was great, atmosphere was absolutely
buzzing and there were so many spectators that
came along to watch those taking part.
The ice cream van and bouncy castle along with food
vendors, coffee stalls and a bar meant there was
something for everyone and most definitely had more
of a mini festival feel about it, picnic benches to park
your rear and soak up the buzz around you whether
you were watching and waiting or post run.
We watched a few waves set off, a nice different
warm up to what is normally seen at events that
I’ve attended and then it was our turn. I wish I’d
remembered the practice pose for the slide which we
did in the warm up, totally blinded by the splash my
arms were kicking up into my face until I realised I
should have my arms out to the side! Doh!
