24 TRAINING The great outdoors Based at Suffolk Food Hall in Ipswich, Suffolk, Field Fit is the brainchild of a Personal Trainer, Coach and OCR Athlete Jack Carpenter. Situated in beautiful farmland, with views over the river Orwell, Field Fit is fast becoming a favourite training facility for the UK OCR community. From a young age, Jack was a keen swimmer and triathlete, and went on to find the world of Spartan and OCR, taking part in his first Spartan in 2016. After relocating to Suffolk, Jack realised there was a huge need for outdoor and OCR specific training facilities in the area, and this is when Field Fit was established in 2018. Field Fit specialises in outdoor bootcamps, but also in the more competitive side of OCR. It features a super-short course, short course and long course. With Spartan being the main OCR series in the UK, Field Fit has obstacles such as Ape Hanger, spear throw, Z walls to cater to Spartan athletes, but also has many technical obstacles, inspired by European races such as Toughest and Viking races. Jack has built Field Fit from the bare bones. What was an empty farming field in 2018 is now home to over 30 bespoke obstacles, all hand built by Jack and with help from the Field Fit members. There is a real community feel here, despite having some of the most technical training obstacles in the UK, all abilities and ages are welcome, and the members really look after each other. Field Fit has also hosted some of the biggest names in OCR for training too, with Nicole Mericle, Aaron Newell and Ryan Atkins having all taken part in bootcamps and led special bootcamp sessions themselves. “The obstacles here are so varied, there’s something for complete beginners to accomplish, but also obstacles that can test even the well-seasoned OCR racers among us. Field Fit is such a fantastic place to train”. Charlie, Field Fit member. Field Fit has a timetable of weekly bootcamps which cover not only OCR, but HIIT, weights and running. Alongside this they also host regular events throughout the year, from nighttime endurance events to their flagship event, the Big OCR Weekend – this year on the 20th August – you can sign up via www.fieldfit.co.uk/big-ocr-weekend Field Fit is also home to the Field Fit Academy, bespoke OCR training for 8–16-year-olds, training and building confidence in some of the most talented kids in the UK OCR scene. “I love sending my kids to the Field Fit Academy, they have both completed two terms here now and their confidence has grown in abundance, not only their confidence with obstacles but life confidence too. It’s such a fantastic place for them to train and burn off energy from the week.” Mark Power – father to Jess and Finn. Alongside running Field Fit, Jack is also a running and OCR coach, UKOSF coach, Spartan SGX and level 3 PT qualified. fieldfit.co.uk www.facebook.com/fieldfitatthesuffolkfoodhall/ www.instagram.com/field.fit/ jackcarpenter.co.uk Field Fit is the brainchild of a Personal Trainer, Coach and OCR Athlete Jack Carpenter
